An Easier Way To Request A Student Name Change
The security of student data in BAIP is of paramount importance. Because of this, access to student records in BAIP is limited. Students can easily be added and removed from classes, and their usernames and passwords can be adjusted by teachers, but other student data is view only and cannot be changed (i.e. student tutorial scores, student names, etc.).
Student names are view only in part because BAIP users occasionally enter state numbers incorrectly. This can lead to the mistaken perception that a student's name has been mistyped into BAIP. In these cases, open access to name editing might lead to 1) correct names being changed to incorrect names and 2) student data getting stored with the wrong student. Restricting name editing functionality acts as a safety valve to prevent these kind of accidents from occurring.
Student names, though, do change. Perhaps a student has been adopted or maybe a name was incorrectly entered into BAIP and need to be updated. Since teachers are not allowed to directly edit this student information, how does one go about getting a student name changed in BAIP?
The Old Way
Until recently BAIP teachers and BAIP district contacts have both had to contact our main offices by email or phone to have a student's name changed. Users are still invited to click on the "Contacts" link at the top right of most pages and use the contact info listed under "Main Office" to request a name change. But now there's a more intuitive way to request a name change...
The New Way
In the same place teachers edit student usernames and passwords inside their classes, they can now request student name changes. Click "My Classes" (tab) >> "Manage Class" (class link) >> "Edit Students" (tool link). To the right of each student record teachers will now see a link entitled, "Request Name Change" (Fig 1).

Clicking on a "Request Name Change" link for a student take a teacher to the BAIP error reporting system (which users can also get to by clicking "Report Error" at the top right of most pages). Notice how the Error Type, current Student Name, and State ID fields are already filled. Teachers only have to describe what needs to be changed in the description box (Fig. 2).
