Tutorial Revisions
Happy new year and welcome back to BAIP!  I hope the end of 2008 and the start of 2009 have treated you well.  As you jump back into BAIP you will soon discover that changes have been made to both the structure of BAIP tutorials, and how students and teachers view grades for these newly structured tutorials.

1. Tutorial Structure Revisions
A, New Question Retries
Retries have been added to all BAIP tutorial questions.   Now, when a student answers a tutorial question incorrectly, instead of being sent to the final remediation screen for that question, students are asked to retry the question one additional time.

Answer Step 1
Fig 1a. First Try At Question
Initially, tutorial questions will work just as they have in the past.  Once an option is chosen, the “Submit Answer” button will appear and the “Next” button will become active.  At this point the student can click either to proceed.

Answer Step 2
Fig 1b. Incorrect Answer On First Try
If a student’s response is correct, final question remediation is given and the user continues on with the tutorial.  If, on the other hand, the student’s first response is incorrect, a student will now use either the “Try Again” button or the “Back” button to try the same question a second time.

Answer Step 3
Fig 1c. Second Try At Question
The student now attempts the question a second time.  Their initial response is grayed out and the word “Retry” appears on both the top of the question and in the mustard colored navigation bar so the student understands that are retrying the same question and not attempting a new question.

Answer Step 4
Fig 1d. Final Question Remediation
On the submission of the second try, regardless of whether the student response is correct or incorrect, the student is taken to the final remediation screen for the current question.  A green “Done” and “Correct” will appear at the top of the page for correct responses and a red “Done” and “Incorrect” will appear for incorrect responses.  This question is now closed.  Students cannot change their answers to this question for the rest of the tutorial session.

B, New Motivation Questions
Students will now also encounter 2 sets of motivation questions when they take a tutorial: one set at the midway point and at other at the end of the tutorial.   At the top of every tutorial page there is a mustard colored navigation bar with numbered boxes telling the student where they are in the tutorial.  2 additional boxes with smiley faces will now appear in this row of numbered

Fig 2b shows a motivation page when a student first arrives on the page.  Only after a student answers both motivation questions will a “Submit Answer” button appear allowing the student to continue (as indicated by the black arrow in Fig. 2b).

Once a set of motivation questions has been submitted, selections cannot be changed.  During a tutorial session a student can go back to a motivation page to see what they’ve selected, but they won’t be able to make changes.  Additionally, students are only asked motivation questions on the first attempt of a tutorial.  Motivation questions will not appear in any repeat

2. Tutorial Scoring Revisions
With the addition of question retries, students now have 2 scores for each tutorial: their scores with and without retries.  Students will be shown a score for each upon completion of a tutorial.

So which score shows up in a teacher’s gradebook?  That’s for the teacher to decide.  New settings have been added to the teacher gradebook which will easily allow teachers to view gradebooks with or

There are some other notable changes that have been made to the teacher gradebook but we’ll save that discussion for next month!

Thanks for using BAIP this year and thanks for helping us make BAIP better.  As always, please feel free to contact me with your questions and comments.
