BAIP News
It is hard to believe that the holiday break is about to occur. For you, the challenge is to maximize your instructional time before students begin to focus on their upcoming vacation. For us, we are striving to meet our development goals for the year and confirm schedules for our students who will continue working throughout the holidays. Several of our students are international, so most will stay on campus. We certainly encourage all staff and students to spend time with family and friends while maintaining the balance of work that is on a time schedule. Thus, our lab is not typical of other academic units across the University during the break.
We will begin the New Year by releasing a new version of the BAIP tutorials. One of the suggestions received was to provide an opportunity for students to retry an item when they respond incorrectly. The current version provides them feedback on the correctness of their responses. If their response is correct they are given feedback on why their answer is correct. If they miss the item they receive feedback on why their response is incorrect and why another choice is correct. The revised version of the tutorials allows the student to retry any item they miss. When they retry, their original response is grayed out so they have only three choices. Additionally, we have added two more concept reviews. We believe this new model increases the instructional value of the tutorials. There will also be icons embedded in each tutorial to allow students to indicate their perceptions on the tutorials. We are attempting to gather motivational data that will be helpful in designing future versions.
At the time we release the new tutorial version, we will allow teachers to volunteer as participants to assess the effectiveness of the new version. This will not involve additional instructional time or will teachers require any special training. It will merely involve checking items on a format to communicate how they are using BAIP.
We wish each of you a happy holiday and a Happy New Year. Most importantly, we wish for you quality time with family and friends and time to do what whatever inspires you to work with children and youth.
