Changing Student Usernames
Teachers using BAIP have always had the ability to go into their classes and change their student’s passwords.  The system generated passwords in BAIP are complex and unmemorable and can be a barrier to student usage.  But what about student usernames? Can they be changed?  Yes, thanks to your feedback!  After a handful of teachers reported a need for username editing, we’ve added it to the system.

Now when you go into any one of your classes (hit the “Manage Class” link attached to each class listed under the “My Classes” tab) you’ll notice that one of the tools on the left side of the page has changed names: “Change Student Passwords” has become “Change Student Usernames & Passwords”.  This tool does just what you expect it to do.  It allows you to change both usernames and passwords for your students.

What “Must Be Unique” Means
When you click on this newly named tool, above the column entitled “Username” you’ll see a note that reads “Must be unique”.  Every student username has to be different from every other student username so BAIP can deliver the right assignments to the right students.  If you want to change a student’s username it has to be unique not only in your own class, but also in the entire BAIP system.  Basically, when you pick a username for a student, no other student in BAIP can have that username.  When you choose a new username for a student, there are 2 ways to find an available name:

1. Guess
This is how you find a unique username when you set up an account on most websites.  You keep typing usernames in until the system stops complaining.  That works in BAIP as well, and can be a good solution when you’re only trying to change 1 or 2 student usernames.  This approach becomes burdensome, though, when you’re trying to change many student usernames at once.

2. “Generate Unique Usernames”
Below the column title, “Username” you should also see a link that reads: “Generate unique usernames”.  Click this link and BAIP will not only generate usernames, BAIP will make sure they’re unique.  If you’re only looking to change one username, you can hit this link, copy the generated username you want, and then restore the original usernames by hitting the “Restore original usernames” link which will have replaced the “Generate unique usernames”.  Then all you have to do is paste your copied new username into the appropriate student record!

Thanks for using BAIP this year and thanks for helping us make BAIP better.  As always, please feel free to contact me with your questions and comments.
