Administrating BAIP in Larger Districts
In this newsletter we’ll focus on issues that affect local BAIP contacts when they set up and manage BAIP in their districts.  Specifically, we’ll look at some BAIP administrative issues that affect larger districts, but will be pertinent to other districts as well.

Long Load Times When Using “Add Teachers” and “Add Classes” Tabs
When district contacts sign into BAIP district tools to administrate BAIP locally, they are provided access to a handful of tools.  Amongst these are the “Add Teachers” and “Add Classes” tools that can be found by clicking tabs at the top of most district tool pages.  When smaller districts sign-in, they immediately see a page display for the “Add Teachers” tool.  Larger districts, though, might find that there is a long delay before a page display comes up!

Why the delay?  A database has to be searched to find all the teachers in the district.  As that list of teachers grows, so to does the time it takes to find the teachers in the database.  If too many teachers are searched for at once, the delay becomes noticeable and frustrating to users.  To make matters worse, anytime a district with large numbers of teachers tries to execute a delete or edit on a single teacher or class on either the “Add Teachers” or “Add Classes” pages, the action happens almost instantly but then they’re stuck suffering through another delay as the list of teachers is reloaded.  We’ll continue to word on refining the speed and efficiencies of our database searching, but we’ve also
created a new page display strategy to avoid these delays
and hopefully avoid some headaches.

Now, when districts with more than 1000 teachers come to the “Add Teachers” page or the “Add Classes” page, BAIP will avoid these long delays by not displaying a long list of teachers.  Instead, simple teacher and/or class counts will be displayed for each building.  By clicking on a building’s link, users will see the teachers attached to that building and they will be able to perform all the same functions as on the district wide page without having to deal with annoying delays.

But what if you need to see all the teachers in your district listed on one page?  It would be pretty inconvenient to have to click on a bunch of building links in a 100 building district.  In cases where seeing the list of all district teachers is more important than any delay, a button and .ink will appear at the top of the “Add Teachers” and “Add Classes” pages for district with more than 1000+ teachers.  They’ll allow district contacts to toggle back and forth between fast abbreviated versions and slower versions where everything is displayed.

View all teachers in district (slow)   OFF: View all teachers in district (faster)
If you see this button you’re currently looking at the abbreviated version of the page.  Click the button or link to turn ON the long display. If you see this button you’re currently looking at the long version of the page.  Click the button or link to turn OFF the long display.

Finding Teachers Attached To More Than 1 School
As time passes, teachers inevitably will not only come and go from the district but they will also move from 1 school to another.  This is particularly true in larger districts.  As local contact continue to manage BAIP for their districts, the issue of teachers being erroneously added to more than 1 school emerges.

First is should stated that it is not necessarily an error to have a teacher added to more than one school.  There are a number of cases where single teachers are teaching BAIP classes multiple buildings in the same district.  But what happens when we have a large list of teachers, maybe thousands, and we know where a teacher belongs today but we’ve forgotten where we might have added them a year ago?

Enter a new small icon (Fig.2) on the “Add Teachers” page that will appear beside any teacher who is attached to more than 1 building in your district.  The number in the middle represents the number of buildings they are currently attached to in the current district.  Use the icon to scroll around your list and quickly find those teachers attached to multiple buildings in your list.  Where the multiple attachments are in error, simply delete the teacher from the incorrect school(s).
