Remembering Where Everything Is
After a relaxing (or taxing) summer, another school year starts anew. Maybe you used BAIP last year and you decide to use BAIP's lessons and online tutorials again this year. Then it dawns on you. You've forgotten where BAIP is. You've forgotten your BAIP password. You're not even sure how to set up a class since it's almost been a year since you last set one up. You could use a BAIP refresher.
BAIP Main Website
http://baip.elearndesign.org/
The main BAIP website can be found at the URL above.. To sign in, teachers and administrators will use their email (as entered into BAIP by their district) and BAIP password. Forgotten passwords? Not a problem. Teachers and administrators can click on the "Forgot your password?" link (located just below the password entry box on the sign in page) to have their password emailed to themselves. If the password reminder tool complains that an email is not recognized, and the email has been entered correctly, users should feel free to contact one of their local BAIP district contacts or one of us at the BAIP main office (see "Contacts" below).
Students will also go to the main BAIP website to take BAIP tutorials assigned to them by BAIP teachers. Instead of emails, students use their unique BAIP usernames and passwords to sign in. Where do students get their usernames and passwords? When teachers click the "Manage Class" link on any of their classes, they'll find a tool entitled "Distribute Student Username & Passwords". This takes teachers to a printable page of usernames and passwords that can easily be cut up for distribution. If a teacher wants to adjust student passwords before handing them out, they can use the nearby "Change Student Password".
Contacts
Earlier we said that teachers should feel free to get in touch with local BAIP district contacts or the BAIP main office. At the top right of most BAIP pages a "Contacts" link with an envelope icon next to it will be available. BAIP main office emails and phone numbers are always available through this link. After signing in teachers will also see their local BAIP district contacts who are responsible for adding teachers, students, and even classes into BAIP for their districts.
Removing Old Classes, Setting Up New Classes
When teachers sign into BAIP they'll see 2 tabs in the upper left corner of most pages. The "My Classes" tab is the place in BAIP where teachers manage their students.
Returning teachers might see classes from the previous year displayed. If May or June, 2007 end dates were set for these classes, they'll be listed in the "Expired Classes" list. Links in this expired list allow classes to be archived individually or all at once. All class removal and archiving works exactly the same: if a class has no scores associated with it the class is entirely deleted from the system. If there are scores associated with a class, though, the class is stored on a backup server. Notice that even though the class might be moved to a backup server, all previous student scores will remain available to future teachers. If a teacher later assigns a tutorial to a student who previously took the same tutorial as part of a now archived class, the new teacher will have access to and see that student's score.
If teachers set end dates for last year's classes that fall after the today's date, they will still appear in the "Current Classes" list. Teachers can simply hit the "Remove Class" link on these classes and they will be archived exactly as if the class were first moved to the "Expired Classes" list and then archived.
Returning teachers may also find that their old classes have been removed for them. In this case it is likely that one of their local BAIP district contacts has removed classes using the BAIP administrative tools. On the flip side of the coin, new and experienced BAIP teacher's may find that upcoming 2008-2009 classes already show up in their accounts. When this occurs it's because a local BAIP district contact has added classes for a teacher. Be aware that teachers and BAIP district contacts can both add, update, and remove classes from a teacher's account.
Finding BAIP Lessons & Tutorials
The second tab in the upper left corner is the "My Classes" tab. This tab takes teachers to the place in BAIP where they can find and assign BAIP content. The left side of the screen indicates the grade level currently being looked at while the right side of the screen uses the structure of Kansas standards, benchmarks, and indicators to organize lessons and tutorials.
Under each indicator, teachers will be able to view resources on the left, and if they decide they want to use any or all of the resources in their instruction, they can assign them on the right. When a teacher assigns an indicator by clicking "assign indicator", they'll see columns representing all the resources for that indicator, along with rows that represent each of their classes. Teachers simply check the boxes of the resources that they wish to assign and hit the "Apply" or "Done" button.. All tutorials will, by default, use class begin and end dates to determine when tutorials begin and stop displaying in student accounts. Teachers can click on "set dates" to set different dates for some or all the selected resources, and they can click "set notes" to enter notes that will be seen by students next to assignments.
It's important for teachers to check the lessons they use in BAIP. The BAIP staff will use that information to determine how to modify and grow BAIP in the future. As more resources become available, they will also appear on this assignment page.
BAIP District Tools Website - (Administrators Only)
http://baip.elearndesign.org/district_tools
If you happen to be a local BAIP district contact, you will also have access to the above URL. You can use your same email and BAIP password you use to access BAIP to access this administrative site to help you set up buildings, teachers, students, and classes in BAIP for your district.
Thanks for using BAIP this year and thanks for helping us make BAIP better. As always, please feel free to contact me with your questions and comments.
