KAMM and Text-to-Speech Update

gradeschool studentAssessment Framework Information: The Kansas Assessment of Multiple Measures (KAMM) represents an initiative to enhance the appropriateness of the General Mathematics Assessment in measuring the performance of students with disabilities. A major goal of BAIP is to provide resources for teachers and that benefit all students including students with disabilities and students who are struggling to meet academic expectations.

In an effort to supplement KAMM and to expand BAIP, we have started work on mini BAIP lessons that focus on the modified assessments of KAMM. We are currently in the design phase. The intent is to make the mini lessons accessible from the basic BAIP lessons at each assessed indicator and grade level. This will be achieved by a link so that teachers in general education can easily access mini lessons while engaged in instructional planning. Special education teachers will have the choice of accessing the lessons directly as they enter the BAIP system or in the same manner as general education teachers. The objective is to build a hybrid lesson in that the instruction will focus on the same indicators at the instructional level of the modified assessment while retaining the resources on prior knowledge.

The target is to have these available in the fall. We will share additional information as the lesson development and interface design progresses.

Text-to-Speech:We continue to make progress on creating the capacity of text-to-speech for the tutorials. All of the alt-tags have been completed. The challenge that we have is symbols such as “+, ×, -,” etc. cannot be read and must be converted to images. Additionally, our tutorials are designed within frameworks and this too adds complexity to the text-to-speech conversion. For the PC user, this is not a problem; however, for MAC computers this remains a problem.  We are in the process of making the conversion of symbols to images so that readers will work across plat forms.  Please see the Exchange in this issue for a discussion on how to use selected browsers.
